Czech Republic to restrict use of glyphosate 18th September 2018
The Czech Republic will limit the use of substances containing glyphosate as of next year. There will be a ban on using the substance both as a weedkiller and as a drying agent to accelerate plant maturation.
The European Union decided lin 2017 to extend a licence for the herbicide by five years until 2022, with 18 of the bloc’s 28 member states voting in favour, including the Czech Republic and Germany. However, the EU allows members to decide whether to impose restrictions at a national level.
The ban is controversion because, while a World Health Organization study found that glyphosate probably causes cancer, other studies conducted since have disagreed. Environmental campaigners have been calling for an outright ban in Europe for glyphosate, but Monsanto has long insisted that the herbicide meets EU licencing standards.
